Free internet for students
The Australian Government has established the School Student Broadband Initiative External link (SSBI) to provide free home internet until 30 June 2028 for up to 30,000 unconnected families across Australia with school aged students. The National Referral Centre (NRC) has been established to allow families to self-nominate for the SSBI and can also provide families assistance with nomination details and contacting and arranging a service provider if required.
To be eligible for the SSBI, a family must:
- have a child living at home that is enrolled in a Queensland school (Prep to Year 12)
- have no active broadband service over the NBN network—having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility
- live in a premises that can access a standard NBN service
- not have had an active NBN connection during the previous 14 days
- have their suitability determined via an assessment conducted by the NRC.
To apply, families can directly contact the NRC or be referred by a participating nominating organisation. Nominations will remain open until the 30,000 national cap is reached.
How to apply:
Families should be encouraged to contact the NRC on 1800 954 610 (Monday to Friday, 10am–6pm AEDT). Call-back and webchat functions are also available via the NRC website. The NRC team will assess a family’s eligibility by checking their residential address and asking some questions to determine if they meet the government’s eligibility criteria.
If eligible, families will be issued a voucher which can be redeemed at any of the participating SSBI retail service providers. The NRC will also be available to assist with contacting a family’s SSBI internet service provider of choice or providing follow-up support.

Deputy Principal – Mrs Tanya Wright

Positive Primers. What are they?
The school has been introducing what is referred to as Positive Primers into the classroom. Positive Primers are, simply put, short simple activities that take place at the beginning of the school day and or the beginning of lessons. These short simple activities may involve a game, a question, a quote or a YouTube video (just to name a few) that is used to stimulate student engagement before commencing a lesson. They are designed to foster positive emotions, engagement, creativity and flexible thinking. The aim is to prepare students’ brains for learning and promote a sense of belonging and connectedness.

Year 10 Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan Interviews
This week saw the first round of SET Plan Interviews for our Year 10 students. During this interview students discussed their planned pathways for senior schooling, as well as post schooling. Students have selected their subject preferences for Year 11, 2026 as well as Year 10 Semester 2 to support these options.
Students will have a second round of SET Plan Interviews in Term 3 where the Year 11 subjects will be confirmed for 2026.
Term 2 – Presentations and Workshops
This term will see a number of special guests from external agencies come and present to our Senior Students. Elevate Education will cover study skills and exam preparation for our Year 11 and 12 students as well as the University of Southern Queensland covering a range of post schooling tips and pathways across a number of weeks.
We continue to appreciate the community links we have with a range of different agencies and the benefits these have for our students and staff.
Year 11 – Unit 1 Assessment
Year 11 students are currently in a heavy assessment load as they finalise work for Unit 1. These results will contribute towards QCE Points for Unit 1, therefore it is important that students work with their teachers to meet deadlines and achieve a satisfactory standard.

School Musical ‘DISCO INFERNO’
The Warwick State High School annual School Musical production for 2025 is on at The Warwick Performing Arts Centre (TPAC) on 5, 6 and 7 June. ‘DISCO INFERNO’ takes you back to the time of the 1970’s and is packed with over 30 classic 70s floor fillers, it is a musical celebration of the spirit of the decade that brought us glitter, flared trousers and platform shoes. The musical combines a hilarious script, fantastic characters and a score of hits to create a high energy musical to warm your heart and get your feet tapping. Whether it is your first experience of the life and music of the 1970’s or whether you were there when it all began, this musical promises to be a night to remember.
Nine members of the Classroom Music Program and the Instrumental Program, ranging from Year 7 to Year 12, where chosen to be part of the band. We thank community member and friend of Warwick State High School, Mrs Helen Bruggemann, and former Warwick State High School student Hannah Buckmaster for volunteering their time slot to assist. They have been working very hard to perfect the score and obtain an authentic 1970’s Rock feel.
We are very fortunate to have talented musicians to provide ‘live music’ for our Musical productions, and not have to rely on pre-produced ‘backing tracks’ to accompany the actors. Please mark the date on your calendar and come along to see the show and support them if you can! Further information about ticket prices and purchasing will be in the next newsletter.
Ian Follett

English and Humanities News
Acting Head of Department – Mrs Kirsty Caterson

Welcome to Term 2 from the English, Humanities & Languages Faculty
We’re excited to welcome all students and families back for Term 2! The English, Humanities, and Languages Faculty is ready for another term of engaging learning, creative thinking, and academic growth. This term, students will continue to build on the strong foundations laid in Term 1, exploring new texts, topics, and skills across all year levels.
English – New Texts, New Voices
This term, students will continue to read, write, and speak with purpose across a variety of engaging units. From imaginative responses to in-depth analysis, English students will be challenged to think critically, express themselves clearly, and explore the power of language in shaping meaning. Each year level will encounter new texts and assessment types, providing plenty of opportunities to develop their confidence and communication skills.
Humanities – Understanding the World Around Us
In Humanities, students will continue investigating the forces that shape our world—past, present and future. Whether it’s through the study of historical events, legal systems, economic trends, or social issues, our subjects are designed to encourage inquiry, debate, and real-world connections. We look forward to seeing students apply their knowledge in thoughtful and meaningful ways this term.
Languages – Deepening Cultural Understanding
Our Japanese language students will be expanding their vocabulary, refining their sentence structures, and exploring cultural practices as they develop their confidence in communicating in a second language. Term 2 will offer more opportunities for students to engage with authentic Japanese materials and apply their skills in context.
We’re proud of the work our students accomplished in Term 1 and can’t wait to see what they achieve this term. With continued focus, creativity, and curiosity, Term 2 promises to be another rewarding chapter in each student’s learning journey.
If you have any questions or would like to know more about what your child is studying, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Here’s to a great term ahead!
Mathematics and Science News
Head of Department – Mr Brian Amedee

Welcome back to the new term in Mathematics and Science.
Science classes will run several experiments that link theory to practice. Students will plan, collect data, and write short reports on their findings. All work will follow our standard safety rules and teamwork guidelines.
In Mathematics, the focus is on building strong skills in number, algebra, and reasoning. Lessons will include problem-solving tasks, quick checks for understanding, and short discussions on solution methods.
After-school tutorials are held every Tuesday, 3:10 – 4:10 pm in S Block. Students should bring specific questions or topics they find difficult so staff can give direct help. Regular attendance is the best way to clear up misunderstandings and stay on track.
We look forward to steady progress across both subjects this term.

Representatives from Warwick State High School were proud to be involved in ANZAC day ceremonies across Warwick on April 25. We were well represented at each of the Community Services including the Dawn Service, war graves ceremony and then Eden Gardens. Piper Atkinson was extremely honoured to represent Warwick State High School and speak at the Dawn Service.
Warwick State High School students came out in full force for the 11 o’clock march, with over 80 students attending.
